Accessibility

Born-Digital is committed to making our Islandora and Archipelago themes as accessible as possible to everyone, including those with visual, hearing, cognitive and motor impairments. We're constantly working towards improving the accessibility of our systems to ensure we provide equal access to all of our client’s users.

Measures to support accessibility

We take the following measures to ensure accessibility within our Born-Digital themes:

  • Include accessibility throughout our internal policies.

  • Integrate accessibility into our procurement practices.

  • Provide continual accessibility training for our staff.

  • Employ formal accessibility quality assurance methods.

Conformance status

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) defines requirements for designers and developers to improve accessibility for people with disabilities. It defines three levels of conformance: Level A, Level AA, and Level AAA. Born-Digital's themes are delivered fully conformant with WCAG 2.1 level AA (as tested by WAVE Web Accessibility Evaluation tool). Site content must also be created in a conformant manner to maintain this status.

See our Accessibility Conformance Report (Based on VPAT® Version 2.4) for details.

Limitations and alternatives

Despite our best efforts to ensure accessibility of our Born-Digital themea, institutions may find some limitations. Below is a description of potential limitations, and potential solutions. Please contact us if you observe an issue not listed below.

Potential limitations when using one of the Born-Digital themes:

  1. Audio and Video: Audio and video files may not have transcriptions. Video files may not contain captions, or audio descriptions. These files are not generated in Islandora or Archipelago. Institutions are encouraged to create and upload transcriptions for audio and video content.

  2. Color contrast: Institutions are able to adjust theme colors and may combine colors that do not meet color contrast requirements. Institutions who wish to further customize theme colors are encouraged to test new colors using the WebAIM Contrast Checker.
