Internships

Born-Digital is committed to growing the Islandora and Archipelago communities. We are proud to offer semester-long internships to students in the School of Library and Information Science (SLIS) at Simmons University to help build the next generation’s skills. Our internship projects range from metadata remediation and migration to developing digital repositories. If you are interested in a Born-Digital internship, read on to see if you meet our requirements and for information on how to submit your application.

Required Skills

As a SLIS student interested in a Born-Digital internship you:

  • Are comfortable using the command line and can:

  • Install or update packages/libraries/etc (e.g. python)

  • Have experience with regular expressions, or excited to learn about them on the job

  • Have experience managing content in Drupal or other content management systems, such as Wordpress

  • Are excited to work through existing documentation and do research to fill the gaps in existing documentation

  • Approach tasks with curiosity (e.g. learning about Github to install Workbench)

  • Are a self-starter who is excited about coming up with projects and shaping your time at Born-Digital

  • Thrive in environments that include time for collaboration AND working autonomously

Required SLIS Courses/Equivalences

Metadata Intern

  • LIS 485 Introduction to Programming 

    • Not required if you have experience in a scripting language like python

  • LIS 458 Database Management

  • LIS 487 Data Interoperability

    • Required, but can be taken concurrently with the Born-Digital internship

  • LIS 445 Metadata

    • Not required if you have work experience creating and maintaining metadata

Frontend Technical Intern

  • LIS 455 Usability & User Experience Research

  • LIS 467 Web Development and Information Architecture

    • Not required if you have work experience with HTML/CSS/JS and a content management system such as Drupal or WordPress

Students with a passion for designing and coding Accessible websites are especially encouraged to reach out for this internship!

Example Projects

Fall 2021 Metadata Intern primary responsibilities: 

Create sample collections from open sourced digital objects and their metadata that can be exported and ingested in order to:

  • Stress test new Islandora installations

  • Demonstrate Islandora functionality in the Born-Digital marketing website

Fall 2021 Technical Intern primary responsibilities: 

  • Working with the Project Manager, develop a set of scripts that use regular expressions to “clean” and reformat metadata exported from the client’s source databases in preparation for ingestion to Islandora via the Workbench tool.

  • Working with the Maintenance & Support lead, develop a set of automated test scripts for the existing BEHAT testing framework. Explore the possibility of expanding on the pilot project using the Backstop.js automated visual regression testing framework.

Other Internship duties may include: 

  • Assisting with client metadata ingest

  • Testing websites after build and prior to release for client acceptance testing

  • Contributing to the company’s institutional knowledge/documentation of how Islandora 8 handles metadata

  • Documenting project progress and learning processes for the Born-Digital blog
